This is the sixth chapter of the study of the so-called Eastern Mediterranean Hoard (EMH). The hoard's contents began to appear on the market in late 2018 and continued to be dispersed until late 2021. There is no information about how it was discovered. Given the large number of coins from Cilicia and Pamphylia, these regions are the most likely locations where the hoard was found. Unlike in earlier times, when coin dealers would often consult prominent academics and share details about their inventory, this hoard was quietly dispersed without such collaboration. This study is the result of five years of painstaking detective work, piecing together fragmented clues to reconstruct the…

Ayrıca, bu çalışmada Meslek Dili kavramı yerine Bilim Dili Olarak Türkçe kavramı esas alınarak bazı yeni kelime ve deyimler önerilmektedir. The subject of this study is two bronze Tarsos coins—one measuring 1/10 of a standard stater and the other a full stater—which have recently emerged online and, to date, have been cited by all sources only as silver examples. These bronze coins were likely prepared for silver plating. Whilst countless examples of counterfeiting using the plating method can be found from early periods onwards, bronze coins prepared for plating that have survived to the present day without being gilded are extremely rare.

The mints from which the greater part of Augustus' abundant coinage was issued are still not certainly known, and the chronology of the issues is still, in many cases, insecure. This is true for some of Octavian's colonial coinages. Even though the iconography and the legends indicate the purpose of their minting, most of them, maybe purposefully, don't indicate location. One such colony was identified on a two-denominational coinage as COLONIA IVLIA.

The astragalos (pl. astragaloi) is a sheep or goat's tarsal bone, or ankle, attached to the shinbone and radius. It naturally has four sides and two rounded ends. The four sides don’t match, and each side was assigned a different meaning or value. The astragaloi have been found in excavations starting from the Neolithic period, and they appear to have been used for various purposes, including as game objects, ritual items, and good luck charms.

A significant number of coins, either previously unknown or considered extremely rare from approximately nine eastern Mediterranean mints, including Mallos, Tarsos, Soloi, Holmi, Kelenderis, Ura, Side, Aspendos, Phaselis and various Cyprus mints, were represented in the hoard. There are also at least three groups of coins that still pose a challenge to attribute to a specific mint. This chapter examines the material that belongs to Holmoi, Ura and Kelenderis.

Archaeologically, Adana should be considered unfortunate as the favourable location of the settlement by the River Saros (modern Seyhan) in the middle of the fertile plain of Çukurova has been inhabited uninterruptedly for millennia, making its earlier stratum inaccessible. Furthermore, ancient resources provide limited information about the city in its ancient past. Despite all the setbacks, the moderately abundant numismatic legacy, which is well-documented by the late Edoardo Levante in his paper "Coinage of Adana" from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD, has been a fundamental source of information. The new and rare types studied here should provide new insight into understanding…

Although it is impossible to document or prove, the human voice must have been one of the earliest sound-producing instruments. Archaeological evidence shows that the history of sound-producing instruments and music goes to the earliest times of human civilization when we were primitive hunter/gatherers. Music must have been born when humans discovered that they could produce sounds in a certain rhythm. It might be conceivable to think that musical creations were carried on through oral traditions before the invention of writing. When we consider how long it took for writing systems to be developed in different language speaking peoples, music must have continued to be transferred to next…

Ancient coins are studied in different periods depending on stylistic changes in engraving art and historical events. The Archaic Period to art historians began earlier, but for numismatists, it may be dated approximately from 650 to 480 BC. It is the age of symbolism: animals, mythological creatures, plants, and later depictions of gods, goddesses and other deities were the main types of coins. The Archaic Period works have a stiff and ridged appearance similar to that of the Egyptian and the Hittite sculpture. The Archaic Period marked a transition period between the geometric period and the classical period. Alongside the patterns and abstract forms of the geometric period, a more…

Modern scholars prefer to terminate the Archaic Period at the time of the Persian Wars. Although there were significant changes in rendering of art forms, the Archaic Style continued to exist well into the Classical Period. The art of the Classical Period is characterized by joyous freedom of movement and expression. It celebrates mankind as an independent entity. During this period, artists begin to expand the formal aesthetic boundaries while they worked in expressing the human figure in a more naturalistic manner. They were able to replace the strict asymmetry of the figure with a free-flowing form more true to life.

During this period the city-states begin to give way to a more global culture, and the entire Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East flourish in a background of conflict, commerce, and cross-cultural influence, with the Macedonian imperial ideals and the Greek language dominating the scene. Men must have been fascinated by birds very early on because of their flying capability. They invented many winged deities, male and female in the Hittite, Assyrian and Egyptian cultures. Some winged deities were depicted on the coinages of cities like Mallos in Kilikia and Kaunos in Karia as their unique gods. Birds also appeared on coins as attributes of gods and goddesses together with other mythological creatures with wings. They symbolized the powers of the deity they represented. Many coins display rich mythological stories around birds. This presentation aims to bring a good variety of birds represented on ancient coins.

Mallos is a well-known ancient city in east Cilicia but, in the absence of any visible ruins, the question of its exact location has been troubling historians and archaeologist for centuries. The information by ancient writers like Strabo, Pomponius Mela and Arrian provide is helpful but not enough to pinpoint its exact location. The site of the ancient settlement must have been buried by the notorious silt (Strabo) the river Pyramos has carried for centuries. This presentation, which includes the historical, cartographical and geographical evidence, and the one that will follow this one with the numismatic evidence aim to shed some light to its probable location. A well-known series of coins minted in the name of Claudius (AD 41- 54) at a certain Caesarea have for over a century perplexed numismatists who were unable to identify the mint among the several Caesareas located in Cappadocia, Cilicia and Syria, although findspot evidence pointed to eastern Cilicia and northern Syria. This study argues that the coins should be attributed to Mopsuestia, temporarily renamed Caesarea.

Archaeologically, Tarsus is an unfortunate city like many others in Cilicia because the settlement location has not been changed since the earliest times, one coming on top of another and making it difficult for archaeological research and excavations. Therefore, Tarsos coins, which reflect many aspects of cultural and religious life, have been tremendously important to the historical study of this city.

Interpretation and translation must have become popular professions as soon as cultures with different languages came in contact with one another. Although it is hard to determine when people began to interpret, it would be safe to assume that translation started right after the invention of writing.

It has been said that archaeology stands on a foundation of potsherds, and it would be just as true to say that numismatics stands on a foundation of coin hoards. They provide us with the framework of our classification of ancient coins, and frequently a single hoard has provided us with enough material to study a whole series of coins and clarify it whereas before the discovery of the hoard the type of the coin represented was extremely rare or even unique.

Tyche or Tykhe, be it her turreted head or her full figure, seated or standing, was one of the most popular figures on coins from the 4 th century BC to the time of Justinian I (527-565 AD) in a region spanning from Arabia to Spain. In ancient Greek religion, Tyche (Τύχη, meaning "luck" in Greek) was the presiding tutelary deity that governed the fortune and prosperity of an individual and a city and their destiny. In Rome she was known as Fortuna.

Coinage of Adana has been well-documented in many publications and catalogs. However, it is not surprising to come across a new specimen every now and then. The bronze autonomous coin from the Tahberer collection that will be examined here is unpublished in major references and it deserves particular attention, which will enhance our understanding of the autonomous coinage of Adana.
